TEFL Uruguay is a four-week, face-to-face course arriving in Montevideo in 2027 — straight from 20 years of running the same programme in Florence, Italy. It’s designed for foreigners visiting or living in Uruguay, and for English-fluent Uruguayans ready to turn their language skills into a teaching qualification they can use at home or abroad.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A TEFL qualification opens doors to teaching English (and other languages) abroad, online, in private institutes, in bilingual schools or through private classes.

The training programme has been devised and run by US education specialists in Florence, Italy for twenty years. Now it’s coming to Uruguay in 2027.

For people who want to come to Uruguay to study TEFL

One of the strongest appeals of TEFL Uruguay is for foreigners who want to come to Uruguay specifically to get their qualification.

Uruguay is stable, a full democracy, well-educated, gay-friendly and increasingly attractive to foreigners from Europe and North America. The capital Montevideo is calm, walkable and easy to navigate. And the locals are super friendly.

You enter with a 90-day tourist stamp in your passport. No need for visas or other permits*. And spend a month in Montevideo doing an intensive, in-person qualification that offers job prospects all over the world.

The programme is intensive, so it makes sense to think of the course itself as the main focus and then build in extra time before or after for travel, Spanish classes or simply getting to know the country. So that Uruguay won’t be the backdrop, but part of the experience.

Uruguay is a great hub for anyone wanting to explore and work in the rest of South America with direct flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and more. And note, residency and work permits in Uruguay are significantly more straightforward than in Europe.

For people already living in Uruguay

TEFL Uruguay is a great fit for:

  • Uruguayans with strong English who want formal teacher training
  • Retirees interested in part-time or meaningful second-career options
  • Expats who want to connect more deeply with local life through teaching
  • Parents, especially women seeking qualifications that could support online teaching and more independent work
  • Current teachers looking for professional development
  • University students or recent graduates exploring a future in education.

What the course includes

The course runs in Montevideo for four weeks and includes 140+ hours of work, combining instruction, independent work, lesson planning and teaching practice.

This is not a one-method course. It is built around the reality that learners differ by age, background, confidence, goals, proficiency and culture, and that good teaching has to respond to those differences. The focus is on what teachers actually need to do in real classrooms. Students work on:

  • lesson planning
  • teaching methodology
  • demo lessons
  • teaching practice
  • feedback and reflection
  • different learner levels and needs
  • inclusive, student-centred teaching
  • educational technology
  • online teaching
  • the growing role of AI in language learning.

You leave with an internationally-recognised certification to teach English anywhere around the world.

And you receive support with CV preparation especially in understanding how to organise your experience and highlight the most relevant strengths invaluable when applying for work.

Live teaching practice with local students

One of the biggest strengths of the programme is its emphasis on live teaching practice. You won’t train only in theory. You will teach across beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and work with different kinds of lesson types and classroom situations. This gives you real experience adapting, rather than repeating one formula.

This is one of the clearest advantages over a purely online certification. Watching modules is so not the same as planning lessons, teaching real learners, adjusting in the moment and receiving direct feedback.

There are plenty of online courses that promise a certificate quickly and cheaply without giving students the practical training they need. TEFL Uruguay is built on the opposite idea: that learning to teach English properly requires academic grounding, practical work, live teaching experience and thoughtful feedback.

It is a course for people who want to become capable teachers, not just certified ones.

The Italian connection – TEFL Tuscany to TEFL Uruguay

The founders of TEFL Uruguay are Kristin Lanese (pictured above) and Rachele Lawton, both specialist TEFL/TESOL educators from the US. Kristin is based in Italy where she has run TEFL Tuscany — a TEFL certification programme in Florence — since 2006. More than 1,000 students from the Tuscany programme have gone on to work and travel internationally with their qualification.

Rachele travels frequently to Uruguay and has also worked closely with the Italian programme as a moderator and workshop leader. The Uruguay connection came naturally. The two have known each other for more than 20 years and have collaborated professionally in the past.

What graduates have gone on to do

There are so many great stories of lives changed. One graduate moved to Brazil, built a teaching career there, met her future husband and created a new life. Another couple met during the course, continued teaching afterwards and eventually built a life together in the United States.

One student’s experience teaching English and Spanish

Many Uruguayans grow up abroad or study English and already have the language ability but no formal teacher training. TEFL Uruguay turns that proficiency into a practical qualification that can lead to work in Uruguay, online, or abroad.

Though you’re learning ‘teaching English as a foreign language’ the same training can also be applied to teaching your own mother tongue as a foreign language.

So not only will you get to refine your English over one very intense month with native English speakers (your tutors and your fellow students are likely to be from the US, UK, Australia), you’ll be able to use everything you learn for teaching your own language abroad.

Clara from Barcelona shared that after finishing the course, she was offered a Spanish teaching job and found herself drawing directly on what she had learned: lesson planning, activities for different levels, different kinds of lessons, communicative work, and strategies for both small and large groups.

Teaching beginners can be especially tricky. Many new language learners already have exposure to English, but typically very little experience of Spanish. In this programme you take a class as a complete beginner. At TEFL Tuscany, Clara’s training involved taking a class in Czech. So she had a real understanding of what her beginner Spanish students would be going through in her class.

    1. Hi Carolina! TEFL Uruguay’s program provides a solid foundation in language teaching that is relevant for all languages. We’ve had previous students take the course and report back that it helped them a great deal with Spanish teaching. If you’d like to chat more, feel free to email us at uruguay@tesolteflcert.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Hi,
I just completed the form at the link for TEFL!
It seems to be not quite set up for Montevideo however as it was asking me about accommodations in Florence. I have been following IL for a while and a couple of family members told me about you and Uruguay. I was thinking about traveling as a scouting trip in December but if I can get in this course in Jan-Feb 2027, then I will consider this my scouting trip. Are you working directly with TEFL on this new program? What else can you share with me about living in Uruguay as an American Ex-Pat? I would love to have some other ex-pats nearby so I can make friends quickly.
