Right in the heart of Ciudad Vieja, a single block away from the bus stop, lies Puertovideo, a Montevideo apart hotel owned by Dirk, a friendly German who will greet you at check-in ready with all the info you need to make the most of your stay.

A retired chef, Dirk started in the rental business and after managing properties on the coast, he felt ready to take on bigger challenges. The charm of Montevideo’s old town and its great location walking distance from many of the capital’s tourist attractions inspired him to open Puertovideo.

Each studio apartment has a huge double bed, great showers and the best equipped kitchenettes you’ll find in Uruguay—there’s even a mini dishwasher. The quality of the furnishings, bedding, and attention to detail make this Montevideo apart hotel on par with the most renowned chain hotels. It’s the little things that count, and Puertovideo carefully curates every part of the experience—from the spacious closet, the very generous number of pillows, and even a universal adapter available in every room.

As it’s an apart hotel, the front desk is only staffed during check-in hours and room cleaning is not scheduled daily, but can be requested beforehand. This keeps rates low. This is one of the most economical stays you’ll find in Uruguay and certainly one of the very best. The neighbourhood its located in, Ciudad Vieja looks gritty, so you may feel wary about walking around after dark. Just take the same precautions you would in any other city that you are unfamiliar with.

There is a sauna and small (unheated) pool on the terrace, as well as chairs to lounge and enjoy the absolutely incredible views of the Old City, the port and the Bay of Montevideo.

What you should know

Minimum three nights. We recommend weekdays to see the Old City at its bustling best. Think about staying from Wednesday.

Some of the rooms have the most incredible views of the Bay of Montevideo Part of the reason the room rates are so reasonable is that Dirk does not offer different room categories. It’s one price for all rooms, including the ones at the back with the most incredible views of the port and the water. Ask Dirk if a room with a view is available at the time of check-in.

This is one of the best locations close to everything so make the most of it! There’s parking on the premises but given how well-connected Montevideo is, you can just use public transport and walk around. There’s a supermarket a block away, a pharmacy three blocks away, and many eateries in the area including several Guru’Guay recommends, such as Es Mercat and Cabaña Verónica.

Fully equipped kitchen Every unit on this Montevideo apart hotel has their own kitchenette and they are so well-equipped most people use them. Despite there being an extractor, the smell of others cooking is perceptible.

Opening times Check-in from 3pm to 6pm and check-out up to 11am. Message beforehand if you plan to arrive later.

How to get to Puertovideo – Apart hotel Montevideo

Coming from the airport Puertovideo is so good, it’s not just for budget travellers. But if you are a budget traveller, move like a local and take the bus from the airport. There’s an app called Moovit where you can search where you want to go and it’ll tell you what buses to take and how long until they arrive. It may be a bit uncomfortable due to public transport not having much space for your luggage, but if you packed light this is a very cheap and practical option, for a tenth of the price of a cab.

Coming from the port You can walk just 17 minutes and you’ll get there. If arriving after dark, we recommend taking a cab.

Under 45 minutes from Montevideo’s Carrasco airport, 5 minutes from Buquebus Ferry Terminal and 20 minutes from Tres Cruces Bus Terminal.
