An Argentine father and daughter duo fell in love with a quaint little town in the sierras of Maldonado and the lovely Aiguá hotel, Ámbar Posada, was born. Somewhere between a boutique hotel and a wellness centre, this charming inn captures the essence of the picturesque town of Aiguá, one of Uruguay’s best kept secrets.
Nestled in the hills, close to Uruguay’s highest point, very few people—even Uruguayans—know about Aiguá (say eye-WAH). Founded in 1892, the town is characterised by over one hundred century-old mediterranean-style townhouses painted in eye-catching pastels, set on either side of wide palm-lined avenues. Even the supermarket has a facade that is a throw-back to the nineteenth century. The little settlement was supposed to be an important stop on the route between Brazil and the port of Montevideo—its imposing architecture and wide avenues were projected for a much larger hub—but that development never came.
Why Aiguá? The true meaning is lost in the history of time. But most believe it comes from Guaraní (a South American indigenous language) with “iguá” meaning ‘running water’ or from “araí” (clouds) and “gua” (place), or from “aí breña” and “guá” (origin).
Ámbar Posada is the principal hotel in Aiguá and fits right in with the nostalgic vibe. Built in 1906 the reception, dining room and vine-covered patio with its well—thought to be the oldest in town—are all original. In contrast the guest rooms are modern with massive beds and spacious en suite bathrooms. In 2025 a new wing brought the total of guest rooms into twelve. Sitting to read next to the cosy fireplace or having a drink on the patio, you feel right at home thanks to the friendliness of the staff.
On site there’s a versatile studio for a variety of activities, as well as a small outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, available from spring 2026.
What to do
Utter peace and spectacular drives Whichever road you take to Aiguá, you’re going to be travelling through the sierras of eastern Uruguay. Hillsides—with their gentle slopes and white rocky outcrops—remind more than one international traveller of Greece. It’s a very different Uruguay from those rolling plains around Montevideo. The most scenic roads wind their way up from the coast—the R39 from Punta del Este and the R109 from La Paloma in Rocha. Wherever you stand once in Aiguá, you see the sierras at the end of the sleepy streets and all you hear is birdsong and the odd barking dog. The area nearby is perfect to go stargazing.
Wellness centre For the time being, yoga classes and massage services are not available while these offerings are being restructured. In the meantime, guests are welcome to enjoy the hotel’s warm and inviting spaces, perfect for relaxing, reading or getting some work done.
Ask staff for recommendations of what to do in town and further afield. For example, Emiliano sent us to a charming tearoom in a plant nursery two minutes walkaway for the most delicious coffee and cakes.
Don’t miss hiking and swimming The hotel has access to its own private countryside property, where guests can enjoy 12 km of hiking trails, waterfalls and natural swimming holes along the stream that runs through the land, just a few minutes away by car.
What you should know
Expect to be welcomed as more than a guest Staff are all from Aiguá and go the extra mile to show off their town to visitors. Remember, you’re in a tiny town with a population of just over two thousand and covers just over a square kilometre—the size of three football fields.
The charming old-fashioned dining room with an open fireplace is where breakfast (included with your stay) is served. It also serves as the hotel’s shared living space, offering a warm, timeless atmosphere with rustic wooden tables and traditional décor. It is the perfect place to enjoy a good glass of wine, play board games or simply unwind and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.
The guest rooms (including a wing built in 2025) are all modern with large bathrooms.
The hotel does not currently have an on-site restaurant Instead, guests receive personalised recommendations for local lunch and dinner options based on their tastes and preferences.
Not just a peaceful retreat for travellers looking to relax The hotel is also fully equipped to host retreats, workshops and a wide range of private or corporate events, accommodating groups of up to 30 guests.
Trivia! The Uruguayan comedy The Theory of the Broken Windows (2021) was filmed entirely in Aiguá and some scenes feature Ámbar. Watch the trailer.
