How does the consultation work?

Your private consultation takes place on the video platform of your choice (Zoom, Skype, FaceTime). Prior to the meeting, you will complete a questionnaire (we recommend over a good glass of South American red) regarding yourself, your expectations and your lifestyle.

Your opportunity to have private one-on-one time with Karen A Higgs, author, Guru’Guay founder and Uruguay’s foremost English-language expert.

It’s all about local contacts

Like most places in the world and especially in Uruguay, the best experiences and services come by word of mouth. After over two decades in Uruguay and thanks to her ground-breaking work bringing Uruguay to an international audience, Karen has hundreds of trusted contacts in a broad range of fields to share with you.

Why consult about moving to Uruguay?

Uruguay is not a good fit for everyone. No place is perfect, right? And an advantage for one person is a pitfall for another. You’ll receive first-hand, realistic insights tailored to your specific circumstances.

Why consult with Karen A Higgs?

Karen is the creator of Guru’Guay, the most popular English-language website on Uruguay. She has lived in Uruguay since 2000.  Her Guru’Guay guidebooks to Uruguay and Montevideo have been recognised by the Uruguay Ministry of Tourism and the Government of Montevideo as an essential reference for both travellers and expats. Karen is frequently invited to talk about Uruguay as a travel and lifestyle destination by international media—including the New York Times, the BBC and National Geographic–and on the world’s most listened to travel podcasts. The Uruguayan public has also fallen in love with Guru’Guay and Karen appears regularly in the national press.

Karen is British and studied in the UK and the US. She lived in the US, Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain before settling on Uruguay.

Insightful and realistic information provided. Karen clearly has a remarkable understanding of Uruguay and is able to transfer that information that best suits her clients individual needs. Very fortunate to have had a consultation with Karen prior to my move to Uruguay. Will most certainly recommend Karen’s consultation service to anyone seeking relocation to Uruguay.

Karen is a treasure! Her knowledge is invaluable, her love of Uruguay is infectious, and her passion for the work she does shines through! As my family plans to visit and potentially move to Uruguay, Karen’s insights helped us gain more clarity about these decisions in a very short amount of time. Her pre-meeting questionnaire helped us focus and prepare for the meeting but it was evident that Karen had done her homework based on what we wrote to ensure she provided the most current and helpful information. She was straightforward in talking about budget/finances and language and the feasibility of relocating to Uruguay successfully. We also appreciate the referrals and resources she emailed to us after the meeting. I highly recommend this service and believe it’s a worthy investment in your travel or moving plans!

My fiance’ and I were fortunate to meet Karen as we researched various aspects of moving to and living in Uruguay. Initially, we spent a lot of time on the internet reading about the country, its culture, climate and other important topics, but we were having a hard time pulling all of the diverse information together. Karen helped us tremendously by providing context as well as opening up her rolodex for professional contacts. Her help and assistance were invaluable!

It’s been two years since our consultation with you. We would like to thank you for putting us in touch with the financial reality that a move to Uruguay would be. After we had talked to you it hit us like a speeding train how unprepared we were/still are. It was both an incredibly disappointing anti-climax and yet also a good dose of reality at the same time.

At the time we believed that was it for our dreams of retiring to Uruguay so, we switched our endeavours to other parts. In 2019 we spent a month in Mexico south of Guadalajara. There are many expats there – mainly Americans and Canadians – but a few Europeans as well. It was a great getaway but we also discovered that it wasn’t for us, on many levels. However, it has spurred us on to make further plans, savings and pension projections for our future retirement. Over the past two years since we spoke we’ve been researching retirement options in Mexico, Portugal and France but our research has brought us full circle back to Uruguay as being the most favourable on many levels. So much so that we believe it may be possible to revisit our hopes of retiring there in 5-7 years time.

With that in mind we hope to visit Montevideo and the Atlantic coast in your winter of 2022.

In hindsight we are really grateful to the consultation we had with you. Your pertinent questions about pensions were the reality check we needed.

I am an FAA instrument rated pilot and spend a great deal of time in both Uruguay and the United States. I was interested in flying in Uruguay and contacted Karen Higgs to determine if that was possible. Karen was able to identify two flight schools with English speaking instructors who have been able to put me on track to obtaining flying privileges in Uruguay. I discovered, to my surprise, that there is a vibrant and enjoyable general aviation community in Uruguay and flying here is a great experience. I would not have been able to enjoy this without Karen’s contacts and assistance.

I have played golf all my life and now spend a great deal of time in both Uruguay and the United States. I was interested in playing golf in Uruguay on a regular basis and joining a club but did not know how to go about that. I contacted Karen Higgs to determine if that was possible. Karen was able to identify the right people at the golf club I was interested in and was able to put me on track to becoming a member. The golf club is beautiful and being able to play golf regularly in Uruguay will make my time here much more enjoyable. I would not have been able to enjoy this without Karen’s contacts and assistance.

My husband and I are planning to move to Uruguay and buy a home there. I read Karen’s books and decided to do a half-day consultancy with her during which we would visit some Montevideo neighborhoods and talk about life in the city. We were trying to decide if we would prefer a home in the city or on the coast, and wanted to know more about life in Montevideo. I wound up having an online one-hour consultation with Karen instead, as I postponed my trip due to the Coronavirus situation.

Karen is very easy to talk with. She’s engaging, informative, and helpful. She’s a good listener and wanted to focus on providing information and insights that would help us make a successful transition to Uruguay. She connected me with a friend of hers who works at the university I’ll be working at, and suggested people who my husband might like to connect with in his field.

Karen is a great resource person for all things Uruguay, and particularly Montevideo. She has an extensive network, a long-standing relationship with the city, and has traveled the country. Besides being knowledgeable, she’s also very nice, making the consultation valuable and enjoyable. I recommend working with Karen if you’re considering a move to Uruguay and want to fast track your learning curve about expat life, professional opportunities, local culture, etc.

I grew up in Montevideo but have been living abroad for the last twelve years of my life. A period in which the city, country and myself went through a whole deal of changes. To boot, I got married and had two kids while in the US so the prospect of moving “back” to Uruguay seemed pretty daunting. The questions I had for Karen spanned the whole gamut from trivial -which from the thousand new restaurants are actually worth a visit?- to some issues I was literally working through on therapy.

Karen took my case to heart, asked the right questions and provided actionable suggestions and advice to help me find my place in my own hometown. I would recommend anyone considering moving to this country to talk to Karen beforehand even if you know the town pretty well, like myself.

We are a family looking to relocate from the country we currently live in. We have three children we would like to give the opportunity to grow up in the best possible environment with good education. If anyone of us gets sick we would like to have a good system of healthcare. And we would like to feel safe in our own country. We looked into a lot of options (Europe, Caribbean, etc.) and after reading information about Uruguay we got interested in this country.

Before we became in contact with Karen we had already read a lot on the internet about Uruguay. Some of the ideas we had were being confirmed during the consultation and that is satisfying. We made contact with one of the contacts Karen advised us and exchanged some useful information. In general, the consultation made us more confident about the ways we should or could go before the important decision for my family and me.
We found that one hour was time enough to stay “focused”. The only surprise was that time passed very quickly.
Without any doubt Karen’s knowledge of Uruguay and skills to communicate with people are highly developed. Her very professional way of working gave us a good feeling about this consultation.
We have planned a holiday to “feel and experience” Uruguay before making further plans for the “big step” which relocation will be. We live in a country that needs a Visa to enter Uruguay. Karen helped us with the process of application and we got the Visa without any problem.
We would definitely recommend Karen to anyone else interested in relocating to Uruguay.

I’m a world-traveling English teacher who has long thought about making a move to South America. Through my initial research, I found Uruguay to be appealing for loads of reasons—mostly because it’s the best kept secret on the continent. However, I couldn’t find a lot of current or comprehensive information about the ESL industry and was a bit stumped as to what, if any, opportunities might await me in Uruguay. I came across Karen’s blog and started reading some of the fantastic articles about traveling and living in Uruguay. I jumped at the chance to chat with Karen and get some perspective from someone “on the ground.” Our consultation was very informative. It gave me a chance to ask questions specific to my situation and about particular concerns I had. Karen was full of knowledge and gave me some great feedback. She also pointed me in the direction of additional resources. She was lovely to talk to and gave me a bit more peace of mind about the possibility of relocating. I was thrilled to visit Uruguay just a few months after the consultation and fell completely in love. Between Karen’s consultation and my own research in country, I have a much clearer picture of what future possibilities await me Uruguay. Thank you, Karen!
