A charming boutique winery in Carmelo, Uruguay’s Tuscany, producing just 30,000 bottles a year is on a quest for “the world’s best Tannat”.

This pretty sixty-acre boutique wine estate complete with a small luxury guesthouse and a restaurant is owned by an Argentine property developer with a passion for wine. At Campotinto you’ll be received by wine-maker Daniel Cis who has set out to produce “the world’s best Tannat”.

Campotinto is located in Colonia Estrella, the heart of Carmelo’s wine district—what the New York Times referred to as Uruguay’s Tuscany. The winery opened in 2015, though they’ve been producing wine since 2012. They produce around 30,000 bottles a year. Two-thirds are Tannat. In its quest for the best Tannat, Campotinto is growing Tannat on 24 separate parcels of land. They ferment the harvest from each parcel separately, then after extensive tasting, blend to make a Reserve, a Grand Reserve and save the product of the very best plot for their Ícono Tannat. They also produce a high-end Merlot and a Tannat Marselan.

Carmelo’s climate favours whites. Campotinto produces a sparkling white made with Chardonnay and Viognier called Medio y Medio—half and half—a classic Uruguayan aperitif. Medio y Medio can be sickly sweet. This is a high-range Medio y Medio, introduced originally to serve to visitors who had biked into the vineyard during the hottest summer months and wanted something quintessentially Uruguayan yet refreshing to quaff before they hit the Tannat. Campotinto is also producing a thousand bottles of a delightful Viognier.
