Our VIP day in Punta del Este with Sierra Atlántica exceeded our expectations.
Before visiting, we thought Punta del Este would simply be a busy resort city, and that wasn’t what we were looking for. Instead, we discovered a surprisingly diverse collection of neighborhoods, each with its own character and pace. We especially enjoyed La Barra, which has a bit of a California vibe. Seeing these areas firsthand completely changed our perspective and showed us that Punta del Este offers all the amenities we wanted without sacrificing the quieter lifestyle we were hoping to find.
Our guides, Juan José and María Eugenia, were exceptional. They arrived well prepared while remaining flexible throughout the day. After a relaxing lunch, they adjusted the second half of the itinerary based on our conversations that morning. We truly felt they understood what was important to us and what we hoped to discover. We purposely visited in winter because the local saying is, “If you like it in winter, you’ll love it in summer.” They also made a point of showing us neighborhoods that remain quieter during the busy summer season.
Because healthcare is an important part of our relocation planning, we visited a hospital and learned more about Uruguay’s mutualista system. Exploring practical aspects of daily life, rather than simply sightseeing, made the experience especially valuable.
Having an entire day to ask questions about neighborhoods, lifestyle, transportation, and everyday life gave us insights we couldn’t have gained on our own. Guru’guay put together, on short notice, a VIP day that was formed from a check list from us plus extras along the way. The most valuable part of the experience was having Diego answer our questions from the perspective of what is the UY way. Diego made initial contact and set details and expectations for a day-trip to Punta del Este through WhatsApp. We knew he was prepared when he picked us up and handed us notebooks and pens. It may seem old-school, but having pages to flip for new topics, new questions to ask, and ease of sharing among the three passengers was ideal. Some things we wanted to know about are not accomplished in UY or even needed in UY. Diego gave us background in history, government, and policies that led us to understand how we would live in UY and framed his responses to help us find our answers from the UY perspective. He was wonderful as a guide, with low-key but clear enthusiasm. He was accommodating and took extra steps and extra time with us. As our Spanish is poor, he stepped in smoothly to translate. He set up meetings, kept us to a timely but not rushed schedule, and even added a detour to Piriapolis on the way back to Montevideo to share with us some points of importance on the way, not only for the beauty of UY but also to bring us back visually to what he had explained in conversation. We are not including all the details of this amazing VIP experience since this is a review and not an agenda, but to say he went beyond “tour” is an understatement. This was immersive, delightful, relaxed, informative, and included meetings and stops both planned and spontaneous.
Our VIP day in Punta was both a delightful experience and an essential and decisive step in our decision making process. Our helpful and informative guides, Diego and Nicole, planned a packed day exactly in accordance with our needs and interests. We drove through multiple communities in the area, and we toured several properties for sale, to give us an idea of what’s available. We toured a hospital so we could better understand the attractive approach to healthcare in Uruguay, met with members of the Jewish community we might someday join, and still found time to visit classic tourist stops like the famous Hand sculpture and the majestic vista from Punta Ballena. A seaside lunch was another highlight. Our only note on the whole day was that with two guides and our party of three, the vehicle was pretty crowded for the drives to and from Montevideo.
